สำนักข่าวเอเอฟพี รายงานเมื่อวันที่ 2 ม.ค. อ้างจากสำนักธรณีวิทยาสหรัฐฯ แจ้งเตือนว่าเกิดแผ่นดินไหวนอกชายฝั่งหมู่เกาะสุมาตราของอินโดนีเซีย วัดระดับความรุนแรงได้ 5.7 ริคเตอร์ เบื้องต้นไม่มีรายงานความเสียหาย และทางการไม่ได้ประกาศเตือนภัยคลื่นยักษ์สึนามิ
ทั้งนี้ แผ่นดินไหวเกิดขึ้นเมื่อเวลาประมาณ 22.19 น. ตามเวลาท้องถิ่น จุดศูนย์กลางอยู่ลึกลงไปใต้ทะเลราว 16 กิโลเมตร หรือห่างจากเมืองเบงกูลู ทางตอนใต้ของหมู่เกาะสุมาตราราว 122 กิโลเมตร
ประเทศอินโดนีเซีย อยู่ในแถบ "วงแหวนแห่งไฟ" ทำให้เกิดแผ่นดินไหวบ่อยครั้ง.
